6th Grade Entrepreneurs

To master their Economic Standards, 6th grade students took on the roles of entrepreneurs. Students first completed research on the origin and characteristics of the boomerang. Next, students took on roles of becoming an entrepreneur and designed their own unique boomerang. Once they completed the construction of their product, students developed selling points and presented their boomerangs to the class. As students worked through the process of research, design, and sales, students discovered their role in the economic system.

Cartesian System and Ordered Pairs
Students in Ms. Bratcher’s class are studying the Cartesian system and how to graph ordered pairs.  The lesson started by reading the book “Rene Descartes and the Fly on the Ceiling” by Dr. Julie Glass.  The legend has it that Descartes liked to stay in bed until late and never could find anything in his bedroom.  One day he was watching a fly on the ceiling and wondered if the fly ever landed in the same spot twice.  He collected data on the location of where the fly landed and used that information to develop the Cartesian system.  Using this information he was able to give all items in his room a place (ordered pair) and never had trouble finding items again.  From the ideas in this book, the ceiling of Ms. Bratcher’s classroom was made into a large coordinate plane using the ceiling tiles as the grid system.  The students used magnetic sticks to graph their given ordered pairs onto the ceiling.  The lesson was extended to provide locations of objects and to play Ceiling Battleship.
